Unusual or atypical forms of bovine spongiform encephalopathy (unusual BSE) refer to a case that does not follow the typical pattern normally associated with "classical" BSE cases. These differences can be in the type or distribution of lesions in the brain, the distribution of the abnormal prion protein (PrPSc) in the brain or an unusual PrPSc pattern on the Western Blot. In addition, the animal may or may not display clinical signs typical of classical BSE.
