Different strains of prions cause different diseases. Strain-typing research conducted in England, Scotland and elsewhere has found the prions that cause Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (CJD) in humans, bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE) in cattle, chronic wasting disease (CWD) in deer and elk, and scrapie in sheep each have distinct attributes. However, the infectious agent that causes BSE appears identical to the agent that causes variant CJD (vCJD) in humans.6,7
